A
recent Manpower Inc. survey indicates that
Canada has one of the most acute labour
shortages in the industrialized world, with only
Mexico feeling the pinch more than this country.
The survey of 33,000 employers
across 23 countries around the world shows that
the much-discussed upcoming labour shortage has
already begun
On average 40% of the employers
surveyed globally indicated that they are
finding it increasingly challenging to fill many
positions.
The three countries with the
highest rate of employers experiencing the
labour shortage crunch were Mexico (78%), Canada
(66%) and Japan (58%).
According to Canadian employers,
the top ten list of positions they are having
the most difficulty finding candidates for is as
follows:
-
Sales representatives
-
Customer Service/Customer
support
-
Engineers
-
Drivers
-
Mechanics
-
Labourers
-
Chefs/cooks
-
Electricians
-
Skilled trades
-
Nurses
Foreseeing the negative effect
this labour shortage could have on our nation’s
economy, the new federal government’s first
budget has an increase in funds allotted for the
attraction and settlement of skilled immigrant
workers.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is on record as
saying that recognizing international
credentials of skilled newcomers to this country
is a priority for his government.
With the signs increasing around the world of a
coming crisis in lack of labourers, and with
Canada already leading the pack in having
difficulty filling key positions, new models of
attracting and retaining workers both
domestically and internationally are going to be
key to the success of the economy and the
companies that power it.
